What To Do If a Tooth Is Knocked Out:
If a permanent tooth has been knocked out, gently rinse the tooth without touching the root and try placing it back into the socket. If that is not possible, keep the tooth moist in milk or saliva and contact our office IMMEDIATELY for information and emergency treatment.
If a baby tooth is knocked out, do not place it back into the socket. Contact our office as soon as possible for further instructions.

Pain Management (or Managing Dental Pain at Home)
If you are unable to visit our office immediately, these tips may help relieve discomfort until you receive treatment:
- Rinse with warm salt water to soothe irritated teeth and gums
- Use over-the-counter pain relief, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol), as directed
- Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek to help reduce swelling
- Dental anesthetics containing benzocaine may provide temporary relief when used as directed
- Avoid very hot or cold foods and beverages if you are experiencing sensitivity
- Avoid chewing on the injured or painful area
- If a broken tooth has a sharp edge, dental wax or cotton may help protect surrounding tissues
Pain-Free Emergencies:
Certain dental emergencies, such as cracked teeth or infections, may not cause immediate discomfort but can still lead to serious complications if left untreated. Prompt evaluation is recommended even if pain is not present.
